Transportation
Burleith is a walkable and bikeable community. Although not on a Metrorail (subway) line, the neighborhood is well served by public bus transit and bus passengers can hop off at several metro stations en route. The D buses are convenient to Dupont Circle (Red line); the 30s buses serve Tenleytown (Red line) and Foggy Bottom (Blue/Orange/Silver lines). Each station is about a mile away (including Rosslyn station in VA), so heartier souls may prefer to walk. For full details, including route maps and timetables, visit the DC Metro website or goDCgo, which offers info on getting around DC.
Metro Buses
Changes in the bus routes serving Burleith are in the works. For now (Fall 2024), the 30s series of buses runs along Wisconsin Avenue, M Street, and Pennsylvania Avenue between the DC-MD border and downtown. The Wisconsin Line buses run from Friendship Heights to the Foggy Bottom metro station (31) and Archives station (33).The Friendship Heights-Southeast Line goes from Friendship Heights to Naylor Road (30N) and Southern Avenue (30S) stations. (In this case the "N" and "S" don't stand for "north" and "south.") Going in the opposite direction and starting at Foggy Bottom are the Pennsylvania Line buses, 32, 34, and 36, which go eastward to Southern Avenue (32), Naylor Road (34, 36), and Hillcrest stations (36).
The D2 loops between Glover Park (farthest point near Stoddert School) and the Dupont Circle Metrorail station. The D6 runs down Reservoir Road to and from Sibley Hospital via MacArthur Boulevard and continues past Dupont Circle to beyond Union Station. The D1 is a hybrid morning and evening rush-hour version of the D2 and D6 that connects Glover Park and Franklin Square (13th and K NW).
Circulator Buses
Unfortunately, the popular Circulator buses will cease to exist at the end of 2024. Until then, riders headed eastbound may board the Georgetown-Union Station Circulator at 35th and Whitehaven Parkway. This route runs south along Wisconsin Ave through Georgetown with a stop near Foggy Bottom. It continues on K Street to the convention center before picking up Massachusetts Avenue and ending at Union Station. Buses run about every 10 minutes; the $1 fare may be paid in cash or with SmarTrip card.
Walking
Getting around on foot is a breeze, from running errands and going out to eat, to exercising and sightseeing. Safeway and a host of restaurants and shops along Wisconsin Avenue are within easy walking distance. Other nearby attractions include Glover Archbold Park, Dumbarton Oaks, Georgetown University, the National Cathedral, and the French Embassy.
Biking
Whether riding to commute or for recreation, Burleith is within easy biking distance of downtown, the monuments, and a host of well-maintained biking trails. Capital Bikeshare members can pick up bikes at the 38th and Reservoir Road docking station or at 34th and Wisconsin Avenue. (Capital Bikeshare is jointly operated by DC, the City of Alexandria, and Arlington, Montgomery, and Fairfax counties.) Others can take advantage of dockless bike and electric scooter programs currently offered by private companies Jump DC, LimeBike, Mobike, and Spin.
Popular DC-MD bike routes include the C&O Canal towpath, the Capital Crescent Trail, and (on weekends) parts of Rock Creek Parkway. In VA, the Custis and the Mount Vernon Trails connect with the Washington & Old Dominion Trail, a 45-mile rail trail. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association offers additional information on bicycle routes and commuting.
Driving
Burleith is very convenient to downtown by Wisconsin and Pennsylvania Avenues, to Dupont Circle by R and Q Streets or Massachusetts Avenue, and to Cleveland Park and Chevy Chase via Wisconsin Avenue. Arlington is just across Key Bridge, which can be reached either through Georgetown or by Canal Road (faster, except at rush hour). I-66 is about 15 minutes away, in Arlington; I-395 is about 15 minutes away, by Arlington Boulevard.
